Individual C50-7665

A Migratory Life,
Measured in Rings

Seven White-faced Plovers (Charadrius alexandrinus dealbatus) were released. Each ring number permanently identifies one bird — enabling researchers to trace its route, lifespan, and recapture history across borders.

The ocarina modelled after Individual C50-7665 (BM/YR) carries a physical replica of its unique leg rings — giving voice to a specific set of research coordinates, and a singular life.

"Not merely as a data point in a national ringing centre, but as a singular life with a unique history."

The First Bird
I Ever Handled

One month of field ringing work — observing, recording, and learning to read individual birds. This direct encounter became the starting point for everything in the exhibition.

Each bird looks slightly different up close. Some have "smoky eye" sockets; others have bright, forgiving eyes that seem to regard the whole world with patience.

White-faced Plovers
Incubating Eggs...

Annotated scientific plates document incubation behaviour and key morphological features — white forehead, lateral breast patches, densely patterned crown — to help the public identify this species in the field.

The Booklet

Field Notes from
A Tropical Island

56 pages. One bird's life, start to finish.

Designed as a handheld companion to the ceramic sculptures, the booklet translates one month of field ringing data — egg flotation tests, banding records, individual observations — into an accessible visual narrative. Flip through all 56 pages below.
